9 x 12 inch hardcover album with thirty pages of German notgeld (emergency money) currency. Each page has about ten pieces, so there are hundreds of notes. (An invoice indicates the album was sold by Spink of London in 1985 for 500 pounds.) Produced in Germany and Austria during World War One and the interwar period, the "necessity money" was issued by towns, municipalities of private or state-owned firms.
Notgeld was a mutually-accepted means of payment in a particular region or locality, but notes could travel widely. Some cases of Notgeld could better be defined as scrip, which were essentially coupons redeemable only at specific businesses.
