Dr. Josef Mengele Cut Square Autograph with Litho. Photograph. This cut square autograph of Josef Mengele measures .375 in. X 1.25 in. and reads just "Mengele". Dr. Josef Mengele the "Angel of Death" over-reached his medical career by experimenting on human subjects without concern of his victims at Auschwitz Concentration Camp in Poland, 1944 . Many of his subjects were murdered in the gas chambers while others were selected for his experiments. Over 6 million Jews would perish in German camps. Other SS doctors found selection of prisoners stressful while Dr. Mengele did so with zeal and a smile. He often experimented on twins for anthropological studies of heredity earning a PhD on the genetics relating to the cleft lip. He was later captured by the Americans in 1945 where upon he was released having not been identified by the usual SS group tattoo and as a war criminal. Escaping to Argentina and later Brazil with the help of other SS fugitives he lived unchallenged and even using his real name. He would remain a free man while the authorities failed to get involved in his capture by the Israeli Mossad for fear of being labeled as accomplices. His son, Rolf would describe his father as a remorseless Nazi who "never harmed anyone and did his duty as an officer". He died in 1979 by drowning, however his remains were never released to Germany for his relatives. Instead, the remains have been positively identified by DNA testing and they are now used for educational and forensic medicine courses at the University of the Sao Paulo (Brazil) school of medicine. Framed at 9 in. X 14 in.
