Needles National Bank, Needles, California, $1 issued bearer draft dated 1894 on the Keystone Mining Co., Keystone, Nevada. This partial note has missing pieces but is the only know example of an issued $1 note. The Needles National Bank only existed for two years, 1893 to 1895. During that time, it held an account on the Keystone Mining Co. at Keystone, Nevada. The Keystone Mine is located some five miles west of Goodsprings in Clark County, Nevada. It was a small producer, with a mill at Sandy, California, but the early management during the first years had another struggle. The Panic of 1893 made silver coins hard to get to meet payroll. Just as other Nevada mining companies had done, the Keystone Mining Co. had bearer drafts printed by the New York Bank Note Co. in $1 and $10 denominations. The experiment was a failure, and soon the Needles National Bank failed and the Keystone mine was sold. These notes state the Keystone Mining Co. was located at the Nevada town of Keystone, yet extensive research indicates there never was a town or even a camp named "Keystone."
