On February 22, 1910, lightweight champion Oscar "Battling" Nelson met challenger Ad "The Michigan Wildcat" Wolgast for a scheduled 45 round title contest in Point Richmond, California.
Lightweight champion Nelson was 28 years old and had won the title by beating Joe Gans in San Francisco in 1908, after having lost to Gans in Tonopah in 1906 (Disqualified in the 42nd round for a low blow). So as champion, he dictated the terms of the fight: waive the no foul rule, 45 rounds. His 22 year old opponent Wolgast was 4 1/2 inches shorter and had never gone more than 20 rounds. Nelson dominated the first 20 rounds, but Wolgast was declared the winner and new champion in the 40th round as Nelson could no longer see. The fight tops virtually every list of the most savage fights of all time. Both fighters suffered from dementia at the end of their lives. Also a 1922 real photo card of Battling Ortega of Oakland, California. A paragraph on the reverse describes his middleweight career. City:Richmond State:California Date:1910
