Nevada Agricultural, Mining and Mechanical Society, Carson City, c.1875. Here are four items from the society: 1) Stock certificate from the society, unissued, like new. 2) Engraved US half dollar, "Nev. S. A, M. & M. S. / Life / J. F. Myers / Member // (obverse of an 1875 half dollar), perhaps from the Carson City Mint, XF. As illustrated in Fred Holabird's "Ghost Towns and Medicines: The Nevada Bottle Book Volume Two" pages 221-224. 3) "N. A. M. & M. Society, Complimentary Ticket." Unused, white card, 50mm by 82mm, small smudge. 4) "The First Fall Meeting of the N. A. M. & M. Society, Complimentary (ticket)," hand-signed by President Geo. Tufly. J. F. Myers was a well-known druggist in Reno from as early as 1879 through at least 1890. George Tufly operated the St. Charles Hotel in Carson City from 1866 to 1875 and was the Nevada State Treasurer 1883-1890 but died the following year. Unused, blue card, 60mm by 97mm, like new.
Incorporated in 1874, the society was designed to showcase the products of the topics in the name. By 1876 it was primarily occupied with horse racing at the state fair. In 1881 a judgement of $87,000 was awarded against the Society but wasn't paid "owing to a scarcity of funds." San Jose Herald, March 25, 1881. There are no published records to indicate when the society dissolved, but it was likely after this judgement. Douglas McDonald Collection.
