Very rare. Muster Out Roll for Miles George, Lt. Col. in the First Battalion of Nevada Cavalry Volunteers, called into service at Fort Churchill, Nevada in December 1864 (just after statehood) until he was discharged in November 1865. Form says he enrolled at Camp Nye, mustered at Camp Douglas UT (Utah Territory). Dated Nov. 21, 1865 at Camp Douglas. Signed by Capt. Bratt. 10 x 28" with folds and some separation. Camp Douglas (later called Fort Douglas) was established in October 1862, during the American Civil War, as a small military garrison about three miles east of Salt Lake City, Utah. Its purpose was to protect the overland mail route and telegraph lines along the Central Overland Route. Fort Churchill, located in Lyon County, Nevada, was established by the U.S. Army in 1860 following the Pyramid Lake War, to protect westbound emigrants, the Pony Express, and telegraph lines from potential Native American attacks . Named after Sylvester Churchill, the fort served as a critical military outpost during the Civil War era, housing up to 600 troops at its peak . It was abandoned in 1869, and its adobe structures were left to deteriorate. In the 1930s, preservation efforts began, leading to its designation as a Nevada State Historic Park in 1957 and a National Historic Landmark in 1961.
