Dateline "Nevada City Feby. 27th 1853." Heartfelt, personal letter from William O. Warnock addressed to his wife, Ellin, and son. A series of entries in the same letter. Explains that "I am trying to do the best I can for you so as to get you and my dear son with us." He is at "a distance of some seven miles" from Nevada City in "a small mining place where I have got some mining claims which I think will turn out rich in the course of a month or two..." Later tells his wife that, for his son, "I want him to study his book...while I dig the gold for his mother..." After Warnock signs his name, there appears to be another letter written by R. Barker beneath Warnock's writing. Were they sharing a letter? Also tucked in is a power of attorney from Warnock (formerly of Charleston, South Carolina) regarding the death of his grandmother, Agnes E. Leadbetter. Four page letter, one page power of attorney. William O. Warnock was born in 1808 in South Carolina. In 1830, he married Ellin Leadbetter. In 1850, he was living in Louisiana. He died in Omega (part of Nevada County during the Gold Rush) from consumption on November 8th, 1854. [Ref: ehrche family tree on ancestry.com] Great Gold Rush lot!
