The ultimate primary source of Nevada history for a central period in the Comstock. Quebedeaux 148. Around 10 copies known. "The Nevada Directory For 1868-9: Containing a Full List of Residents, Mining and Business Men of Virginia, Gold Hill, Silver City, Carson, Washoe, Dayton, Empire City, Reno and Genoa; With a Historical Sketch of the Principal Places; Also, Carefully Prepared Statistical Table of the Mining Interests of the State: To Which is Appended, Masonic and Odd-Fellows' Intelligence, List of State Officers, The Judiciary, State Representatives, Members of the Legislature, Notaries Public, Terms of the Several Courts, Etc., Etc. Together with a Correct List of Virginia Officials, Rules of the Board of Aldermen, and City Ordinances Thereof." Compiled and Published by William R. Gillis, Virginia. M.D. Carr & Co., Book and Job Printers, San Francisco, 1868. 309 pp including many ads throughout. Text is printed on white, ads on white, pink, green, yellow, and orange paper. Page VII and VIII (one page) is detached from binding, but present. Exterior binding sound and in fine plus condition. Gilt lettered spine fine condition. This directory is important for many reasons. First, it's an important factual record of the Comstock in one of its most important, well-populated periods. Noticeably absent, however, is Silver City, even though it is listed on the title page. There is a Silver City Business Directory in the back, but no residence directory. While the title indicates that it is a state-wide directory, it is mainly a Comstock directory (with the exception of Silver City's absence). Second, there is a section in the back talking about the ordinances of Virginia City, an outstanding document used by historians in understanding business methodology. Third, mining statistics are also included, possibly from J. Ross Browne's work or from the County records directly. Fourth, the directory is also the first occurrence of Reno, a city founded on the completion of the C.P.R.R. in 1868. [rarity: iii]City: County: State: NVDate:
