3x mining stock from companies that operated in Nevada and Sierra Counties, California.

1. Star Quartz Mining Company stock certificate No. 253, incorporated in California February 3, 1864. Issued to Samuel Clutter(?) for 100 shares ($5 per share) on June 7, 1864. Nevada County, California. Signed by A. Sanford (president). 5x8.75". Black on white paper. Early revenue stamp. Very Fine.

2. The New York Hill Gold Mining Company stock certificate No. 1173, incorporated in California May 4, 1871, issued to J.B. Underwood for 300 shares ($100 per share) on September 20, 1880 in San Francisco for mine location in Grass Valley. Signed by Robert Matt(?) (president). Multiple dividend stamps on reverse. Black on white paper. Very Fine.

The New York Hill mine was one of the first in the district. The most productive years were between 1852-1865 but then declined with the gold vein. Mining was suspended shortly after 1867 but resumed in 1874 with the Wolf Creek Tunnel. The North Star Mine purchased the mine in 1894 and it is estimated that the mine produced around $1,500,000 from 100,000 tons of ore before closure. As a further note, Newmont Mining Company purchased the North Star Mines properties in 1929, consolidating them with their Empire Mine to form Empire-Star Mines Co.

3. Orient Gold Placer Mining Company stock certificate No. 101, incorporated May 3, 1879 in California. Issued to A. J. Woods for 10 shares ($100 per share) on December 26, 1891, in North San Juan, Nevada County. Singed by W.H. Dahvickes(?) (president).
