Medal, with a suspension loop, is inscribed "1898/Presented by Nevada Friends/For His Service/in War With/Spain/and the Philippines/1899" on the obverse, and a detailed rendering of the Nevada State Seal on the reverse. In 1898 the Nevada Volunteers were organized to assist the US Army in fighting the Spanish. The Nevada Volunteer Cavalry went to Cuba to fight alongside Teddy Roosevelt's "Rough Riders," while the Nevada Volunteer Infantry was sent to the Philippines. After the war was over, a spirited group of friends commissioned a medal to be awarded to every man in the cavalry and infantry. However, it took so long to receive the finished medals that many men had dispersed and could not be found. After medals were presented to the men who could be found, the remainder were melted. That accounts for the real rarity of this piece. 1.25" diameter.
