This may be unique! Includes both a Unionville Nevada Territory postmark and Austin Nevada Territory postmark. Letter sent from Austin to Eureka, Humboldt County, California. Austin and Unionville are in central Nevada and was the third major mining location in early (c1863) Nevada behind the Comstock and Aurora. Addressed to Colonel S. G. Whipple. Stephen Girard Whipple was a 49er, newspaper editor, politician, and a Union officer commanding an all-volunteer "Battalion of Mountaineers" in the Humboldt Military District in the Bald Hills War against the Indians in northwest California during the American Civil War.
