(John) Young 1863 (year of publication) who was the former Superintendent of the New Almaden Quicksilver Mine. Kustel was an early mining engineer who developed methods to process gold and silver ores of the Comstock Lode. Preliminary examination of operations from mining gold and silver to the final casting of the ingot. Illustrations of furnaces, assay gear and more. 327pp with index and 11 plates. PAHER 1059: "This rare volume describes gold and silver ore as they are found in California and Nevada Territory and gives details about different mining methods and milling processes. The author wrote the book at Dayton, the gateway to the silver excitement of the Comstock, in the spring of 1863." Inner front spine splitting, dog ears on first few pages.
