Three rare issued certificates, two different types. No. 49, 73, and 78. One is issued to the company's secretary. All are pen cancelled. Vignette of woman at lake. All dateline Nevada City, California. The company’s offices were at Nevada City, Cal. The company was involved in ice harvesting at Camp 16, later named Pacific, one mile below Prosser Creek and eight miles below Truckee. The ice industry began at Truckee in 1868 when the Truckee Ice Co. and Boca Ice began operations. According to MaCauley, Truckee’s senior historian, in the late 19th century, ice was a luxury for the wealthiest, and was used mainly in upscale San Francisco hotels and bars. It was also used in the mines of the Comstock where temperatures could soar. The ice was also used to keep fruit cool in railcars headed east onboard the Pacific Fruit Express. At one time, there were nine ice companies operating just at Boca. This certificate is extremely rare in issued form. (Prag Collection) City: Boca State: California Date: 1871 hwac# 34130
