Rare! Inc. April 25, 1881. Dateline Reno, Nevada, Sept. 16, 1881. Low certificate #7. Issued for 1000 shares to Trenmor Coffin. Signed by E.D. Wheeler as president and T. Coffin as secretary. Coffin is purchasing shares early in the company's history. Ornate border and vignette of eagle swooping down. Fold lines, otherwise bright and crisp. Coffin is a familiar name for Nevada collectors. His name appears on many Carson and Comstock banking documents. At one point, he was Speaker of the Assembly for the State of Nevada. The Nevada and Oregon Railroad Co. was the second Reno project after the Western Nevada Railroad Co. failed to build a railroad from Hawthorne to Bodie. First spike was driven in Reno on May 28, 1881. It had a very famous stockholders meeting in Reno on Sept. 27,1881 (11 days after this stock was issued). Power struggles within the company led to Thomas Moore trying to prevent Wheeler and his supporters from entering a meeting to vote. Wheeler and company responded with a gun fight that left one man dead and another wounded. Prag Collection
