3/4 Inch Scale Detail of Front/ of the New City Hall/ Cripple Creek, Colo./ John J. Huddart, ARCH'T. One of the leading Denver architects at the turn of the century was British-born and trained John J. Huddart. His many landmarks include the Charles Boettcher House in Denver, Colorado's Fort Morgan State Armory, the Gold Mining Stock Exchange in Cripple Creek, Denver's Filbeck Building, and Cripple Creek's Hotel St. Nicholas. Huddart was very involved with public buildings and was well known as a courthouse architect, producing at least eight in Colorado. His courthouse design phase lasted about seven years, beginning in 1905. He produced plans for six Colorado courthouses, including the Adams County Courthouse in Brighton (1905), Cheyenne County (1908), Washington County (1908-10); Logan County (1908-10), Summit County (1909), Saguache County (1910), and Elbert County (1912). Two final courthouse projects came to Huddart late in his career - Lincoln County (1923) and Custer County (1929) (historycolorado.org). Following two fires within a week in 1896 which devastated Cripple Creek, the city was later rebuilt in brick. The reconstruction period after the fires of 1896 helped change Cripple creek into a first class city, which officially achieved "city" status in 1897. It took two years to complete the City Hall, after which the building housed the central fire department, the board of aldermen, and the clerk's and treasurer's offices. These plans utilize brick and stone building materials, with the number 1896 prominently displayed over the main entrance, which is centered in the structure. Photographs of the historic Cripple Creek City Hall frontage present a different design, a brick building with the number 1898 displayed over left side of the building, above the city hall sign. The right side of the building includes a Central Fire Station sign not included in our print. This may represent one of Huddart's early designs which was later changed to include the fire station, or a new architect'as design might have been used, further research is needed. Measures 37" x 35 1/2", in poor condition, with several tears repaired by document tape, glue residue, and foxing present..
