Hardcover. Brown boards with gilt. 200pp. with many illustrations and a one page map in the front. Harper & Brothers, 1880. Fifteen chapters. A lively, literary travelogue recounting the author's journey through southern Colorado and along the Santa Fe Trail in the late 1870s. Hayes, a journalist and humorist, blends firsthand travel observations with sharp social commentary, offering vignettes of frontier towns, railroad expansion, mining camps, and the rugged landscapes of the Arkansas River Valley, Pueblo, Trinidad, and the Raton Pass. He vividly describes encounters with settlers, soldiers, Native Americans, and the emerging Western culture shaped by commerce, railroads, and displacement. While less of a formal geographic or military report than government expedition accounts, Hayes's work is rich in personality, wit, and early impressions of Colorado's transformation during the post-Civil War westward boom. The book is an important narrative capturing the cultural tone of the New West just before statehood in 1876. Chip to spine. Frontend page detached. Some toning to pages.
