An antique bag from the New Coso Mining Company of Keeler, California, dating from c.1870s-1880s.
The bag is made of canvas with a coarse-woven bag inside, which is attached to the canvas bag at the bottom. It has text reading 'N.C.M.Co./DARWIN' in black paint on both sides. Text on one side is fully legible, text on the other side is blurred. There is a vertical black stripe running up the length of the bag; as color coding was used by some mining companies to indicate grade of ore, this stripe may have served a practical purpose. Some staining.
New Coso owned the Lucky Jim and Christmas Gift mines near Darwin, California, two silver mines that began operation in the 1870s, were consolidated by Darwin Development Co. in 1915, and were eventually bought and operated by Anaconda Mining Co. in 1945. Darwin was the smelter site for New Coso; the resulting products would then be shipped to Keeler, where they would be transported via the Carson & Colorado Railroad. The company's workings were 500' deep by 1884, and they had produced up to $1.5 million of rich ore by 1888.
From the Palazzo collection.
