Cert. #35, issued for 30 shares to Joseph Stadler in 1865 and signed by NH Dennert as president and JB Reafield as secretary. Vignette of a state seal and a small eagle at the right. 25 ct. revenue stamp at right border. Lands were in the town of Shullsburg in the richest portion of the lead-bearing rocks of the Upper Mississippi. Shullsburg was founded in 1820 by Jesse Shull and Henry Gratiot, due to their ventures in lead mining. The company held 200 acres, a perpetual lease for mining purposes (1864 Report of the Lead Deposits of the New Diggings & Shullsburg Mining Company). Many of the mines in the area operated until the 1940's. The last mining operation was in 1979, when the Eagle-Picher mine closed. Black print on white. Uncancelled.
