April 20, 1857 letter on NY Associated Press on 4pp folded pre-printed masthead lettersheet. This is a very fascinating letter describing how pursers got info to the newspapers prior to arrival in New York. On this letter, the marketing agent for the NY Associated Press is offering to supply the ship (SSCA, nee SS George Law) with their newspapers. The agent is also asking for 50 to 200 words about what is coming into port upon their return trip, including "the aggregate account of specie" and "outlines of news of real information from California, Nicaragua or elsewhere." The agent asks Hull to prepare the report and look out for their news boat near Sandy Hook in advance of landing in New York, so that the news could be published before arrival. The agent asks Hull to prepare to throw the report to the news boat. "The pursers of the English steamers give us brief reports in this way." Signed "D.H. Gacy (sp?), agent". The letter comes with a quarter face advertising cover for the "Associated Press Telegraphic Agency". Professionally conserved by the Northeast Document Conservation Center in Andover, Mass
