Had service in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri. Built in 1881 along the south shore of Great Lakes. In 1964 the railroad and other mid-western carriers merged into the Norfolk and Western Railway to form a more competitive and successful system on 7,000 miles of railroad. Combined with the Southern Railway to form Norfolk Southern Corp. in 1982 to try to achieve even higher profits.
