No. 17421, issued in 1873 for 10 shares. Signed by WH Vanderbilt as vice president. RN-U1 imprinted revenue. Punch cancelled. Three vignettes, one train, one dog and coupon with flag. Black ink and border. New York and Harlem Railroad (now the Metro-North Railroad Harlem Line) was one of the first railroads in the United States and may have been the first street railway. Incorporated April 25, 1831 the road opened May 10, 1852 to link New York City with Harlem. Designed by John Stephenson, opened in stages between 1832 and 1852. John Mason, one of company's founders and second president from 1831-1839 was a wealthy banker and president of Chemical Bank ("father of Chemical Bank") was among the largest landowners in New York City who owned big area of what is now Midtown Manhattan. Served as New York and Harlem Rail Road's second president. William Henry Vanderbilt, who signed the stock as vice president of the New York and Harlem Rail Road Company, was the son of "Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt the American business magnate and philanthropist.
