Capital 2,026,200 acres (printed upper right). No. 32, issued to Joseph L. Williams for five undivided two thousandth parts of all the right, title, and interests... on June 23rd, 1846 in New York. Signed by president James Phalen (or Phalon) and secretary William H. Paine. Not cancelled. Black border and print on thin paper. Seven vignettes, mostly allegorical women, but also Native Americans hunting (bottom left). Also circular symbol with star (bottom center). No printer listed. 7.5 x 11" Folds with some separation, creases, toning. James Phalen, John Paine, and William H. Paine, all of New York City, were hired by JR Reynolds of Texas to purchase headrights (a legal grant of land to settlers) in Texas after a decision by Judge John C. Watrous ensuring it as legal. Watrous, Reynolds, and a third member, J.G. Miner, owned half of the company. A Texas statute required that rail companies dispose of patented lands. Railroads used Eastern lawyers to get around the statute. The Illinois & Great Northern used this company as a land trust, "selling" them their scrip land. Records also show that the Rio Grande and Texas Land Company merged their 400,000 acres of land in Texas with this association. [Ref: Texas Land Grants, 1750-1900, Davis] Ken Prag Collection
