Lot of three 1800s-early 1900s reading material includes Harper's Weekly Journal of Civilization Vol. XV-No. 775, New York, Saturday, November 4, 1871, less than a month after the Great Chicago Fire. Cover story is a drawing of "Chicago in Ruins," a reverend preaching on the site of was once his church, and another of residents cleaning up the rubble. Newspaper is in poor condition with some tears, worn edges and yellowing, although cover illustrations are clear. The Great Chicago Fire was a conflagration that burned in the City of Chicago during October 8–10, 1871. The fire killed approximately 300 people, destroyed roughly 3.3 square miles of the city, and left more than 100,000 residents homeless. Also included is the hardcover book, Barnes's Complete Geography, first edition, copyright 1885, by James Monteith, American Book Co., New York, Cincinnati, Chicago. 136 pages, plus 20-page index, 10" x 12.5", many photos, color photos and maps, good condition. Plus, The New Encyclopaedia Britannica (Eleventh Edition), May 1911, Vol. 22, No. 5, appears to be missing cover, otherwise in good condition. Extensive articles/pictorials on shore-whaling, lower California and Mexico. Pages 411-508, with advertisements, 7" x 10".
