Fairly early group for Leadville as the camp was still in its early developmental stage. Letters come from Lawrie Austin who had come to work in the mining camp of Leadville, finding employment at the Grant Smelting Works. Interesting content. An early letter to England exclaims, "...especially as my standing is so good & I have absolute authority in my department - I can do literally whatever I choose." "The only thing required of me is that the furnaces turn out the greatest[?] amount of bullion..." "Rumors of rich strikes up on Eagle River have been going around..." "...make a break straight for Tombstone." Papa is thinking of visiting and Lawrie warns, "...you can't take more than one trunk on the stage." "I am hoping to go to California this summer if I can."

Eight Leadville cancels, most with the Leadville 'L' killer. Five corner advertising covers. One Silver City cancel. Most correspondence is on Grant Smelting Works letterhead. The history of the Grant works furnishes a typical example of growth of Western industries. When the extensive resources of Leadville were proved the foundation of the present smelting was laid by the erection of a single blast furnace. From time to time others were added until last spring when the works were comletely destroyed by fire it was the foremost smelter in Leadville.
