This is a lot of nine mint condition matted and plastic wrapped antique color prints (chromolithographs) from PUCK, a weekly magazine published from 1871 until 1918. Puck was the first successful humor magazine in the United States consisting of political satire expressed in colorful cartoons and caricatures which focused on the the major, mostly political, issues of the day. Puck was quite popular in its day, and very popular among political cartoon collectors today. This group of PUCK cartoons are clever, beautifully illustrated and provide an historical picture of the state of politics of the day. These original prints from the PUCK publication are between 102 to 149 years old. The lot includes the following original prints: one 22 3/4 x 16 inch (with mat) titled "OLD AS THE HILLS"; and eight 15 3/8 x 12 5/8 inch (with mat) including, "THE OLD TICKET," "THE GOOSE THAT LAYS THE GOLDEN EGGS" (dated August 22, 1883), "THE HOSTILES ON THE TRAIL," "TIT FOR TAT," "THE SUMMER ENCAMPMENT SEASON. - A COLD DAY FOR THE CIVILIAN DUDES," "THE KIND OF 'ASSISTED EMIGRANT' WE CAN NOT AFFORD TO ADMIT." (referring to cholera), "A DESTRUCTIVE WORM" (referring to communism, dated April 4, 1883), and "THE LION CAN NOT FACE THE CROWING OF THE COCK" (referring to the English Tunnel Bugaboo)."
