Northern Pacific Railway, transcontinental railroad that operated across the northern tier of the western US, from Minnesota to the Pacific Northwest. Approved by Congress in 1864 and given nearly 40 million acres of land grants used in Europe to acquire construction funding. Construction started in 1870 and completed on Sept 8, 1883 with President Ulysses S. Grant driving in final spike. Had tracks laid in Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, Washington and Wisconsin with a branch into Canada. Used for shipping wheat, farm products, cattle, timber, and minerals and returning bringing consumer goods and bringing passengers.
