District discovered in 1859 not worked until 1874. Ores were silver-copper-lead with assays running up to $200/ton. General Jacob Van Bokkelen, who worked in mine was cause of and killed by a nitroglycerin explosion in Virginia City on June 29, 1873 along with 9 others. Van Bokkelen was an agent for Giant Powder, known to sleep with the explosives stored under his bed. Had a pet monkey and some speculate the explosion may have been caused by the monkey dropping a can. Six cans of nitroglycerine and 150 pounds of explosive powder went off.
