North River Bank $20 bank note from the purser's safe of the SSCA. Stains and hole, conserved by the Northeast Document Conservation Center of Andover, Mass. Haxby G50c. Possibly rare. There were three bank notes from this bank in the purser's safe, two $20 notes and a $5 note. The fact that there were three North River Bank notes is of significance. It indicates the strong possibility that a passenger paid for his ticket in New York for passage on the SSCA, possibly at dock side with this currency.
This bank went into liquidation in late October, 1857. It was still open on October 15th, and was thus doing business when the SSCA left the port of New York in August, and failed shortly after the SSCA was due back into New York.
Of significant interest to SSCA collectors, the president of the Bank was Marshall O. Roberts, the very same person who was the agent for the Unites States Mail Steamship line, and whose name appears above the signature line of the passenger receipts for the New York to San Francisco SSCA voyage. A Forward Cabin passenger receipt is included with this bank note, though the passenger's name is washed out. Roberts signature on the bank note is also washed out, and would have been at lower right.
