Extremely rare. One of the two most famous gold mines in California. Now part of the Empire Mine complex. No. 200 for 3 shares made out to A. E. Hill, Trustee dated May. 20, 1870. The North Star and Empire mines are the most famous of all the Grass Valley and Nevada County mines. Geology: ore carries gold and silver in a quartz gangue, the precious metals occurring free or associated with pyrite, galena, and sphalerite. The veins have a maximum width of 5', with ore shoots averaging 400' to 6W long and proved for over 2,000' in depth. The North Star mine was first discovered by two Frenchmen in 1851 and ultimately became one of the three largest producers of gold in Grass Valley, California and operated continuously for over 70 years, with the exception during the 10 years, 1875-1884, first by the original locators and later by the North Star Quartz, the North Star Gold Mining Co., and the North Star Mining Co. It is the second largest gold producer in the State. On June 25th, 1867 the mine was incorporated and capitalized at $1,200,000; 3000 shares at $400 each. Later the North Star Gold Mining Co. in 1875, along with various nearby claims and the North Star claim was patented. That same year, the mine closed. The mine was reopened by William Bourn, Jr., in 1884 who then sold it to J. D. Hague and associates in 1887. In 1887 the North Star Mining Co. was incorporated and took over the property of the North Star Gold Mining Co. In 1899 the North Star Mines Co. was incorporated to take over the North Star Mining Co. and to furnish the funds necessary for expansion. Red- brown, 25 cent Power of Attorney Internal Revenue stamp at left. A “Report on the North Star Gold Mining property, Grass Valley, California” was written by David Forbes and published in 1868, 13pp., Waterlow and Sons, printers (London). Signatures include T. N.
