Lot of 22. Includes two very rare stocks plus 17 postcards and two photos. Items for both the North Star and the Empire (which neighbored the North Star). FH says the North Star was one of the top two mines in Grass Valley/Nevada City. The North Star mine was first discovered by two Frenchmen in 1851 and ultimately became one of the three largest producers of gold in Grass Valley, California and operated continuously for over 70 years, with the exception during the 10 years, 1875-1884. It was run first by the original locators and later by the North Star Quartz, the North Star Gold Mining Co., and the North Star Mining Co. It is the second largest gold producer in the State. 1) North Star Gold, Silver and Copper Mining Company. "Indian Springs District, Nevada County" (printed below title). Inc. October 5th, 1863. No. 33, issued for 20 shares to HM Phillips on October 26th, 1863. Ultra rare Indian Springs dateline. Signed by president Leaman and secretary MD Hatch. Not cancelled. Black border and print with star vignette. HS Crocker. Folds, small stains. 5.25 x 10.25" Two 10 cent stamps and one 5 cent stamp attached on the left. 2) North Star Gold Mining Company. "Grass Valley, Nevada Co." (printed under title). Inc. June 25th, 1867. No. 25, issued to EN Torrey on June 5th, 1868 in San Francisco. Signed by the president and secretary. Stamp and punch cancelled. Vignette of star in the clouds. Many folds and creases, toning. 5.25 x 12" 3) Seventeen postcards, incl. 6 real photo, one amber, and ten early printed. Includes both the North Star and the neighboring Empire Mine.
