Cert. #116, issued to Osgood Eaton for 1000 shares. Signed by A.C. Taylor as president and D. Wheelan as secretary. Silver Mountain Mining District, San Bernardino, Cal. printed on the bottom. The Silver Mountain district was formed in 1880, through the efforts of Capt. Aaron G. Lane, a road overseer. Lane had been heavily involved in the Ord district mines dating to 1871 and recorded his Snow Storm mine which caused some excitement. In 1874, Lane was appointed overseer for building a road to the panamint mines from the Cottonwoods. His speedy construction of the road enabled stagecoaches to travel from San Bernardino to Panamint before the end of 1874 (empirenet.com/rdthompson). The district was soon known as the Oro Grande district, as the new Oro Grande mine was reported in August, 1880, just a few days after the Oro Fino, located about one-half mile away. These two mines became two of the biggest producers in the district (mojavehistory.com). Oro Grande became a busy little center by the side of the Mojave River with the usual businesses along with the Oro Grande Mining Company's office and mill. It was located about 4 miles north of present day Victorville. The Northern Cross Mining Company was formed in 1890 to mine for gold, silver and lead in the district and erect mills for that purpose. Beautiful certificate has green underprint showing a large snow capped mountain at the top. VF condition and uncancelled.City: Silver Mountain DistrictCounty: San BernardinoState: CADate:
