North Pacific Railroad ran in Ashland, WI and Saint Paul, MN to Seattle and Tacoma, WA and Portland, OR, between 1864–1970. Transcontinental railroad that operated across the northern part of the western United States, from Minnesota to Pacific Northwest. Congress approved a charter on July 2, 1864, groundbreaking occurred on Feb. 15, 1870 with promotional and backing of financier Jay Cooke.. Former President Ulysses S. Grant drove in the final "golden spike" in western Montana on Sept. 8, 1883. Main activities were shipping wheat and farm products, cattle, timber, and minerals; bringing in consumer goods and transporting passengers. Consolidation of railroads after 1970 combined Northern Pacific, Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, Great Northern Railway, and the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway on March 2, 1970, to form the Burlington Northern Railroad.
