Northern Pacific Railway was a transcontinental railroad operated across the northern part of western US, from Minnesota to the Pacific Northwest. Approved by Congress in 1864. Construction began in 1870 and the main line opened all the way from the Great Lakes to the Pacific on September 8, 1883. Railroad had about 6,800 miles of track and served the states of Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin an international branch to Winnipeg, Manitoba.
