The American OSS (the Office of Strategic Services) was tasked with spreading anti-Nazi propaganda inside Germany with the assistance from the German Postal Service. Here is how it worked. In February, 1945 the MO (Morale Operations) of the OSS printed millions of a anti-Nazi literature by distributing it through an underground newspaper Das Neue Deutschland (the new Germany). A German mail train was bombed by B-17s followed by a low altitude airdrop of fake German mail bags complete with fake postage. In an effort to pick-up the mail; the German postal service unwittingly included the anti-Nazi newsprint. If you look closely you will note the postage stamps are actually Hitler with a grinning death-head. The caption should read: "Deutsches Reich" (German Empire) but now reads: "Futsches Reich" (Collapsed Empire). Here are three stamps from Operation Cornflakes for your enjoyment. C. 1945.
