This stock is signed by Joshua L. Chamberlain as company president. Chamberlain fought for the Union Army during the Civil War and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his conduct at the Battle of Gettysburg. On July 2, 1863, at Little Round Top, Chamberlain (then a colonel) and his men fought off the 15th Regiment Alabama Infantry and finally drove the Confederates away with a downhill bayonet charge. He also fought at the Second Battle of Petersburg (after which he was promoted to brigadier general), the Battle of Five Forks, and was given the honor of commanding the Union troops at the surrender ceremony for the infantry of Robert E. Lee's Army at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. After the war, he served as the 32nd Governor of Maine. This stock is No. 69, issued for 100 shares to William Black on Jan. 18th, 1892.
