Rare. 1894 Memorandum of Ore Assay deposited by R. Keating on Jan. 20th, 1894. Deposits were from the Savage Mine battery and settlers (what was left at the bottom of the pans). Signed by Allan Kinkead. The Occidental was the key mine on the Occidental Lode, which was a huge producer in the 1870’s from rich near-surface ores in a very wide quartz vein. Very little mining took place after 1900. An 1889 Carson City Morning Appeal article notes that Kinkead is leaving Reno to take on the position of assayer for the Occidental where his father is asst. superintendent. His father (Colonel James Kinkead) was a pioneer figure in Nevada, serving first as a merchant and then sheriff in Washoe County before changing careers and making a name for himself in mining. In 1885, he went to Virginia City and at one point ran the Best & Belcher, Utah, Occidental and Kentuck mines on the Comstock Lode. He also patented a milling process known as the Kinkead Process to be used on low grade ores. In 1904, Allan was in South Africa running the Angelo Gold Mine.
