Vignette of facility, ornate print, green underprint and border. Of interest on this certificate is the handwritten note "Exhibit E" written on the bottom edge and "Exhibit A....(illegible) written on the top edge. This document deserves more time, attention and research as it represents a Utah Silver mining and Smelting Company in the mid 1870s. Prior to the 1870s, other than some very small placer mines in Bingham Canyon, there were very few successful mining operations in Utah. This certificate is part of the story of smelting and mining in Utah that is an important part of the history of four distinct groups; the Mormons under the leadership of Brigham Young, the United States Army, local prospectors and pioneers, and finally, eastern and foreign financial interests, or more specifically, the Rockefeller and Guggenheim families. The story of smelting in Utah contains all the elements of a great read, including greed, violence, dishonesty, ambition, bribery, extortion and murder. Those interested should start by reading the 1990 thesis, The Development of the Smelting Industry in the Central Salt Lake Valley Communities of Midvale, Murray, and Sandy Prior to 1900
