This is a badge marked "US Indian Police" shield design with a pin-back. Brass construction 2 in. X 1 1/2 in. Condition is good; questionable authenticity. Each reservation had its own police force employed by the federal government. This type of badge was worn by Red Tomahawk, the man who killed Sitting Bull in 1890.

In the 1880's a unit of Indian police was organized throughout the Five Civilized Nations. This new unit was called United States Indian Police (U.S.I.P.). Their duty was to uphold Federal Law. Legendary US Indian Police were Sam Sixkiller (Cherokee) and Red Tomahawk (Sioux).
