Hearst was talked into investing in it after his partnership and success with Marcus Daly in the Ophir Mine in Virginia City, Nevada. Before partnering with Hearst, Haggin was a very successful lawyer, California rancher, and horse breeder. Hearst, Haggin, Tevis & Company was one of the largest mining firms in the United States at the time with operations at the Anaconda Copper Mine in Montana, the Ontario silver mine in Park City, Utah, and the Homestake Mine in South Dakota, as well as Hearst's investments on the Comstock Lode.
