W.S. Hobart / Ophir Mill, Bank of California, revenue check, RN-B16a. Imprinted Nevada 2c revenue stamp over the U. S. imprint. Issued in 1872 in Virginia City to M. S. Wright. Signed by James Fair. Fair was one of the 'Big Four' and future United States Senator. Hobart was a Lake Tahoe lumber baron. The Ophir Mill was located on the Carson River and initially operated by Sharon and the Bank of California before Fair and Mackay took it over. It is often called the "New Ophir Mill" to distinguish it from the much earlier mill with the same name built in Washoe Valley. Spindle cancel, clean. Books at $150.00
