W.S. Hobart / Ophir Mill, Bank of California, revenue check, RN-B16a. Issued in 1872 in Virginia City to F. Birdsall & Co. for $62.34. Signed by John Mackay. Spindle cancel, clean. F. Birdsall created the Gold Canyon Toll Road in 1863. According to Annual Mining Review and Stock Ledger, 1876, F. Birdsall & Co. operated the Lyon Mill & Mining Company in Dayton, Nevada. The Ophir Mill was located on the Carson River and initially operated by Sharon and the Bank of California before Fair and Mackay took it over. It is often called the "New Ophir Mill" to distinguish it from the much earlier mill with the same name built in Washoe Valley.
