Lot of 2. Rare. This Ophir Mill was sometimes referred to as the New Ophir Mill to distinguish it from the 1860s mill located in Washoe Valley. This later Ophir Mill was located on the Carson River. It was owned by the Ophir Mining Company. In the 1860s, it was processing Yellow Jacket ore. In 1868, the New Ophir Mill was owned by William Sharon and the Bank of California. From 1872-83, it was owned by Mackay and Fair and processed tailings. [Ref: Ansari] 1) No. 502, issued to Chadderton (who was the mill supt.) in 1872. Signed by John Mackay. Rare RN-B16a imprinted revenue. 2) No. 517, issued in 1872 to the Golden State Iron Works. Signed by James G. Fair. Nice pair in very good condition.
