Lot of 7. The Ophir Mine is one of the oldest claims on the Comstock and the discovery site for the Virginia City branch of the lode. It was located at the north end of Virginia City between the Mexican and California mines and discovered by McLaughlin & O'Riley. 1) Nevada Bank of SF (handwritten over Bank of California), RN-G, issued in 1878 for "checks." Signed by James G. Fair, mining millionaire and US Senator. Stain in upper left corner. Spindle cancel. Very rare. 2) Nevada Bank of SF, RN-G, issued in 1879 for Pay Roll. Signed by supt. Patton. Light stains. Spindle cancel. 3) Five post-1900 checks (4 different). Includes: 1900 (RN-X, signed by Ross); 1901 (signed by Ross); 1904 (signed by Ryan); and 1912 & 1913 (signed by McCormick). Great collection for this important mine!
