Autograph document signed, a special order assigning a surgeon to the Escort of the Commission to Establish the U.S./ Mexico boundary at the conclusion of the Mexican War. A handwritten order assigning U.S. Army Surgeon Henry Stewart Hewit to duty with the escort of the Boundary Survey Commission. 7 3/4 x 10", staining at right edge; two horizontal folds.

General Edward R.S. Canby (1813-1873) became a Union Major General in the Civil War. Early in the war, Canby served in New Mexico in opposition to Confederate General Henry H. Sibley. He was transferred east where he took command of the Military Division of West Mississippi and was involved in the late-war actions against Mobile. He was killed by Modoc Indians in 1873 in California.

Also in the lot are two Monterey Land Deeds from 1866, and a typewritten history of Monterey, missing the first page.
