Early pass in nice condition! No. 253, issued for 1876 to Henry Breed, superintendent of Boston, Revere Beach, and Lynn Railroad. Signed by John Brandt Jr. as general superintendent. Printed on gray cardstock by Britton & Rey, SF. The railroad was formed from the Oregon Central Railroad in 1869. By 1887, it had stretched from Portland down to the California border in the Siskiyou Mountains. From there, Southern Pacific took over. Famous stage pioneer Ben Holladay was the original leader behind it. The railroad was accused of fraud when it was claimed they were recruiting people from Portland saloons to purchase land as "settlers" and then resell. This led President Theodore Roosevelt to launch an investigation and indictments. However, in 1915 the Supreme Court ruled that the railroad had been built as promised. This led Congress to pass the 1916 Chamberlain-Ferris Act which put the government back in control on the lands. (Prag Collection) City: State: Oregon Date: Inventory# 39336
