Very rare. This is a proof printing of a promissory note/bond done on thicker paper (cardstock). Upper right pencil notations date it as 1874. Stamp on left says this impression was cancelled in 1940. Black border and print, locomotive vignette. Preprinted signature of famous Stagecoach King Ben Holladay as president. Printed by ABN. "Is indebted to the holder hereof in the sum of seventeen dollars fifty cents Gold Coin of the United States for unpaid interest of warrant No. of First Mortgage Bond of this Company, payable without interest at the Deutsche Vereinsbank.." 7 x 13.5" Creases. The railroad was formed from the Oregon Central Railroad in 1869. By 1887, it had stretched from Portland down to the California border in the Siskiyou Mountains. From there, Southern Pacific took over. Famous stage pioneer Ben Holladay was the original leader behind it. The railroad was accused of fraud when it was claimed they were recruiting people from Portland saloons to purchase land as "settlers" and then resell. This led President Theodore Roosevelt to launch an investigation and indictments. However, in 1915 the Supreme Court ruled that the railroad had been built as promised. This led Congress to pass the 1916 Chamberlain-Ferris Act which put the government back in control on the lands.
