Printed California Broadsides on heavy card stock. " No Trespassing" (approximately 7" X 15" and "California Cultivator Protective Service" Sign (approximately 9" x 12")

California Cultivator was a magazine that began publication in 1889 as Poultry in California, became California Cultivator and Poultry Keeper (1892), and finally California Cultivator (1900). In the 1920s, the formation of associations and co-ops was widespread in America. Agricultural publishers created membership groups that brought farmers together as a community to solve problems, address crime and lobby for legislation. Each member received a membership certificate and a sign to post on their property. These signs were used as security “insurance” for member farms and seen as a way to wage “war on rural crime.” Rare to find examples of original cardboard signs this old. Great example of early California land owners property signage.
