Exceptionally fine example of an original early 19th century scrimshaw powder horn. Design shows a woman (Lady Liberty?) holding a 13 star American flag. Three masted sailing shop in the background. Back features a mariner's harpoon and carved "Phoenix" with "NB" below, indicating the whaling ship Phoenix out of New Bedford. The Phoenix was a 423 ton whaling ship built in 1810. It made 9 recorded whaling voyages from May 1822 to May 1859 from New Bedford to Australia and the North Pacific. It was withdrawn from commercial service in 1861 and served as a troop transport during the Civil War.
