Very attractive original advertising broadside for the New York Bazaar, H. Cohn proprietor. 23.5" x 15" "Constantly on Hand the Best Assortment of Ladies', Misses' and Children's Ready-Made Suits & Cloaks...."Located opposite the Alhambra Theatre on Union Street. Printed on very thin paper; perhaps adverting wrapping paper used by the store? The 1867 Pacific Coast Directory lists an H. Cohn clothing business at 13 N. B. Street, as does the 1868-69 Virginia City directory (which gives his name as Herman). This broadside probably dates to the late 1860s. The Cohn family had a large presence in Virginia City and Carson City (as noted in John P. Marschall's "Jews in Nevada: A History"). Herman Cohn emigrated from Prussia with his wife Lottie. He appears as a Placerville merchant in the 1860 census, but then relocated to the Comstock. According to the 1880 census, he died from stomach cancer in 1879 in Virginia City. His son Abe ran the well-known Emporium in Carson City which sold and promoted Dat-So-La-Lee baskets. Provenance: From the Parker Lyon Pony Express Museum, purchased at auction in 1976. Creases and some tears along the edges. State: Nevada City: Virginia City Date: FHWAC#: 41249
