Originum Juris Civilis by Jani Vincenti Gravina, 1717, John Fried, Gleditschii B. Fillium. . (Origin of Civil Law, Books 1 and 2, Pope Clement XI, latest edition) This is a collection of "fundamental works in jurisprudence by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in the Sixth Century." It was reportedly created to "streamline Roman law." It is an important work that has reportedly established the foundations of legal concepts of contract law, property rights and more, standing the test of time for centuries. it is considered "a significant milestone in the history of law."
7.5 x 8.5" tightly bound, calfskin binding (?), chipped at lower spine. "P. Soule" in gilt on front cover. George Soule was a passenger on the Mayflower.
Pierre Soule (1802-1870) was a French American politician, moved to New Orleans in 1825, became a lawyer. He was a Senator for Louisiana 1847-1853, Minister to Spain 1853-1855. Soule was directly related to the New Orleans Cuvellier family, of which several major books in this sale originated. Frank Soule wrote the Annals Of San Francisco, 1855, a true classic.
